Overthinking

Overthinking is the habit of excessively thinking or dwelling on a problem, situation or decision, often to the point of becoming anxious or stressed. It’s when you get caught up in a cycle of thoughts, and you can’t get out of it.

The key to thinking about a problem is to maintain balance. If you consider too little, you might end up making uninformed choices, but if you overthink, you run the risk of ‘paralysis by analysis’.

It can be caused by a variety of factors such as anxiety, fear of making a mistake, or the desire for perfection.

It can make it harder to take action towards a goal and can lead to feelings of stress, confusion, and frustration. It’s important to remember that overthinking is a habit, and like any habit, it can be changed with practice and effort.

Here are some tips to help overcome overthinking and take action towards achieving your goals:

Recognise when you’re overthinking: Notice when you find yourself getting caught up in thoughts. This can help you to take action and stop the cycle of overthinking.

Challenge your thoughts: Challenge the thoughts that are causing you to overthink. Ask yourself if they are realistic and if there is evidence to support them.

Reframe your thoughts: Reframe your negative thoughts and focus on the present moment. This can help to reduce anxiety and worry.

Practice mindfulness: Mindfulness techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, and yoga can help to reduce overthinking by bringing your focus to the present moment.

Get moving: Physical activity can help to reduce stress and anxiety, which can be a cause of overthinking. A simple walk around the block can help to clear your mind and allow you to think more clearly.

Learn to let go: Practice letting go of thoughts that don’t serve you. This can be done through techniques such as visualisation, journaling, or talking to a mental health professional.

Set boundaries: Set limits on the time you spend thinking about a particular problem or situation.

Find a distraction: Find an activity or hobby that can distract you from overthinking and give you a break.

It’s important to remember that overthinking is a habit, and like any habit, it can be changed with practice and effort. By following these tips, you can reduce overthinking and increase your ability to take action towards achieving your goals.
